About this product
The tool the edging spikes are meant to be hit with.
Double headed rubber on a wooden handle. Drives a spike without marking the edging it goes through.
Every metal and plastic edging run in this shop is installed by driving spikes through tabs, and this is what you drive them with.
A claw hammer will do it and will also chip the powder coating off a black steel section and split a plastic tab.
The head is 55 mm across and 90 mm long, double faced, so when one side wears you turn it round.
It is bounce resistant, which sounds like marketing and is not: a mallet that rebounds costs you the second half of every swing and misses more often.
The handle is wood rather than fibreglass, which absorbs more of the shock through a long installation.
This is a small purchase that changes how an edging installation goes, so it is worth being clear about why.
Spikes go through a tab moulded or punched into the edging. Hit that tab with steel and you either chip a coating or crack a plastic moulding, and on a long run you will do it repeatedly.
Rubber spreads the blow. It also lets you tap an edging section sideways into line without leaving a mark on the face, which is most of the fine adjustment on any run.
The double head is the reason to buy this one rather than the cheapest available. A single faced mallet wears flat on one side and then skids.
It is a general tool once the edging is in: paver setting, upholstery, tile and laminate work.
Still deciding?
Not sure yet? That is fine.
You can change your mind. Under this shop's own returns policy you have 15 days from purchase to send it back in resaleable condition, at your cost and with a $39 handling fee per order. We refund the price you paid, including standard delivery.
If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 covers you, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.
Wood, which absorbs more shock through a long installation than fibreglass.
Why not just use a hammer?
A steel hammer chips the powder coating off a black steel section and cracks a plastic tab. Rubber spreads the blow.
What does bounce resistant mean?
The head is designed not to rebound. A mallet that bounces costs you the second half of every swing and misses more often.
Will it mark the edging?
No. The rubber head is non marring, which is the reason it exists.
Can I tap edging sideways into line with it?
Yes, and that is most of the fine adjustment on any run.
Is it only for garden edging?
No. Paver setting, upholstery, tile and laminate flooring all use one.
How heavy is it?
It is a 16 ounce class mallet, light enough to use one handed for a long run.
What if the head works loose?
Soak the handle end in water. The timber swells and re-seats the head.
Should I store it outdoors?
No. Keep the handle dry between jobs or the wood will move.
Can I use it on the stainless edging?
Yes, and you should. Steel on stainless leaves marks.
Is it needed for the decorative border edge?
No, that one pushes in by hand in soft ground.
Does it come with the edging?
No, it is bought separately. The edging kits come with their spikes, not with a mallet.
Will the rubber perish?
Not in normal use. Keep it out of prolonged direct sun when stored.
Can I use it to drive the U shaped steel stakes?
Yes, though those take a hammer more happily since there is no finish to protect.
Is one enough for a whole garden?
Yes. It is a tool rather than a consumable.
Does it have a strap or hanging hole?
It is a plain wooden handle designed to fit the grip of the hand.
How much is delivery?
Delivery anywhere in New Zealand is NZD 25, and it is free once your order reaches NZD 100. There is one delivery service rather than a choice of speeds.
How long does delivery take?
Five to seven days, after a 24 to 48 hour handling time while the order is picked and packed.
Do you deliver across the whole NZ?
Yes, anywhere in New Zealand, from Cape Reinga to Bluff, including Waiheke and Stewart Island.
Is there a minimum order?
No. The per metre and per section ranges are sold by the unit, so you can order one metre or one section if that is all you need.
Can I change my mind after it arrives?
Yes, under this shop's own policy. New Zealand law gives no automatic cooling-off period on an online order, so this is goodwill rather than a statutory right: you have 15 days from purchase, the goods come back in resaleable condition at your cost, and a $39 handling fee applies per order. Email us with your order number first.
What if the item is faulty or not what was described?
That is a separate and stronger right under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, and it is not limited to a number of days: it runs for as long as the goods should reasonably have lasted. You can ask for a repair, a replacement or a refund, and we pay the return postage.
Who pays return postage if I simply change my mind?
You do, unless the item is faulty or we sent the wrong thing.
Can I cancel before it ships?
Yes. Contact us with your order number as soon as you can. Most orders are picked within 24 hours, so the sooner the better.
How do I track my order?
You get a confirmation email with a tracking number once the order ships. Items in one order can travel in separate parcels.
What payment methods do you take?
Card payment and PayPal, both through a secure checkout. Card details are handled by the payment provider and never reach this site.
What currency are prices in?
New Zealand dollars, and that is what your card is charged.
Do you sell to trade or in bulk?
Yes. Use the wholesale quote page with the lengths and quantities you need and we will come back with a price.

Nothing in this range is cut to a customer's measurement before it ships: the sections are supplied whole and the customer trims them if a shorter run is needed. New Zealand law gives no change-of-mind cancellation right on an online order, so what covers a change of mind here is this shop's own 15 day returns policy rather than a statute. The Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 covers faulty, unsafe or misdescribed goods separately, and nothing in the returns policy limits it.
